Ledger Researchers Reveal Android Flaw That Could Expose Wallet Seed Phrases

Your Android phone could potentially give away access to your crypto wallet in less than a minute.

Security researchers from Ledger have uncovered a hardware vulnerability in certain MediaTek chips that could allow attackers with physical access to extract sensitive information, including wallet PINs and seed phrases, before the phone even finishes booting.

The issue affects devices running the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, a chip used in many mid-range Android smartphones. Researchers estimate that roughly 25% of Android devices could be impacted. Even the crypto-focused Solana Seeker phone appears on the list of affected devices.

MediaTek was reportedly informed about the vulnerability in May 2025, but because the flaw exists at the hardware level, there is no permanent patch for devices already using the chip.

For anyone storing significant crypto funds on a mobile wallet, that’s a concerning reality.

How the Boot ROM Exploit Works

The vulnerability exists in the boot ROM, the low-level code embedded directly into the processor during manufacturing. Because this code is physically burned into the chip, it cannot be updated or replaced later.

Ledger researchers demonstrated that attackers could manipulate the chip during startup using carefully timed electromagnetic pulses. These pulses create voltage glitches that cause the processor to skip key security checks during the boot process.

If the timing is precise enough, the attacker can gain EL3 privilege, the highest level of control within ARM architecture.

At that level of access, the attacker effectively has full control of the device.

In testing, the researchers were able to successfully trigger the exploit in about one second per attempt.

Once access is obtained, attackers can decrypt the phone’s data partition offline. That means information stored in the device’s supposedly secure environment—including wallet private keys and PIN codes—could potentially be exposed.

In short, even strong app-level security may not protect against a flaw this deep in the hardware.

Millions of Phones Potentially Affected

The vulnerability impacts a large number of mid-range Android smartphones already on the market, and there is no firmware update capable of fixing the issue on those devices.

MediaTek’s response suggested that physical attacks fall outside its primary security model. However, that position may be difficult to defend as smartphones increasingly hold large amounts of cryptocurrency.

The broader crypto landscape highlights why the issue matters.

According to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, crypto theft reached $3.41 billion in 2024. Personal wallets accounted for 44% of stolen funds, a sharp rise from just 7.3% in 2022.

That trend shows attackers are increasingly targeting individual users rather than centralized platforms.

What Users Should Do

Security experts emphasize that smartphones were never designed to act as secure vaults for large crypto holdings.

As a result, Ledger’s leadership recommends that users who store significant amounts of cryptocurrency move their funds to dedicated hardware wallets, where private keys remain isolated from mobile devices.

A limited software mitigation is expected to appear in the March 2026 Android Security Bulletin, but because the flaw resides in hardware, it cannot completely eliminate the risk on affected devices.

For now, the safest move for users holding serious funds may simply be keeping private keys off their phones altogether.
