Bitcoin stayed close to $90,000 even as tensions flared after a surprise US–Venezuela military shock

Bitcoin barely budged over the weekend, holding close to $90,000 even as headlines were dominated by a sudden escalation in tensions between the United States and Venezuela following overnight military action.

The world was rattled, but the crypto market stayed calm. Bitcoin briefly slipped below $90,000 in early trading before quickly recovering, showing little reaction to a geopolitical shock that would normally spook risk assets.

“The US bombed a country and captured its leader — on a weekend, no less — and Bitcoin has barely moved,” Coin Bureau founder Nic Puckrin wrote on X, highlighting just how muted the market response has been.

From a technical standpoint, analysts see this stability as encouraging. Bitcoin is still trading above its 21-day moving average, a level many view as key short-term support. According to Michaël van de Poppe, staying above that line could leave room for further gains in January if broader conditions remain steady.

That resilience stands out given Bitcoin’s history. In the past, sudden geopolitical shocks or macro stress have often triggered sharp sell-offs across crypto and other risk assets. This time, the reaction has been surprisingly restrained — at least for now.

The tension stems from comments by US President Donald Trump, who confirmed airstrikes on Caracas that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. While the news sparked heated debate online, financial markets appeared largely unfazed through the weekend.

Still, some traders warn the calm may not last. With institutional investors typically inactive over weekends, larger moves could come once US markets reopen. “There’s a lot of geopolitical tension, and next week the big players will return,” said crypto trader Lennaert Snyder, cautioning that volatility could pick up.

Any renewed selling would add to Bitcoin’s recent corrective phase. After a sharp October flash crash, BTC slid more than 30% from its peak above $125,000 to around $80,000 in November, before climbing back toward current levels.

Looking ahead, some analysts believe Bitcoin is settling into an accumulation phase. Linh Tran says the late-2025 pullback reflects a broader shift in market structure, with prices now driven less by retail hype and more by macro forces, institutional flows, and regulation.

Others are even more optimistic. Abra CEO Bill Barhydt argues Bitcoin could benefit in 2026 as global liquidity improves, pointing to early signs that the US central bank is preparing for looser monetary policy. He described the current setup as “quantitative easing light,” suggesting fresh liquidity could help revive risk appetite after a long stretch of tight financial conditions.
