Bitcoin climbs past $76,000 as the debate over quantum security heats up

Bitcoin traded above $76,000 on Tuesday evening on some exchanges, hitting a two-month high. The move comes as traders balance strong price momentum with a growing conversation around Bitcoin’s long-term security—especially the risks that could emerge from advances in quantum computing.

That debate has picked up pace after updates to Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 361, which outlines a potential roadmap for moving Bitcoin away from signature systems that might one day be vulnerable. It’s still early-stage thinking, but it’s enough to spark discussion across the developer community.

At the same time, attention is also shifting toward projects trying to improve Bitcoin’s usability today. One of them is Bitcoin Hyper (HYPER), which has already raised more than $32.4 million in its presale. The project is positioning itself as a Layer 2 built to make Bitcoin faster, cheaper, and more programmable, while still settling back to the main chain.

What’s interesting is how these two conversations are running in parallel. On one side, developers are thinking about how to future-proof Bitcoin at the base layer. On the other, newer projects are trying to expand what Bitcoin can actually do right now.

The Quantum Security Debate

The updated BIP-361 proposal, called “Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset,” lays out a phased approach to dealing with potential quantum risks.

In simple terms, it suggests gradually moving away from older signature types that could eventually be broken if quantum computers become powerful enough.

Under the proposal, new transfers to vulnerable address types could be restricted a few years after activation. Later on, older signature schemes like ECDSA and even Schnorr could be phased out entirely, which would force affected wallets to migrate.

There’s also a research angle being discussed around whether zero-knowledge proofs could offer a recovery path for lost or inaccessible funds.

Some estimates suggest that millions of BTC are currently stored in addresses that could become exposed if quantum attacks ever became practical. That alone has made the proposal a serious talking point.

But not everyone is on board. Critics argue that forcing users to move funds goes against Bitcoin’s core principle of ownership and control. Supporters, on the other hand, say it’s better to plan ahead than wait for a real threat to emerge.

New Ideas From the Community

The discussion got more attention recently after StarkWare’s CPO, Avihu Levy, shared a paper exploring a different idea: using off-chain, GPU-assisted methods to help secure certain transactions without requiring a protocol-level change.

It’s not a full solution, and there are questions about how it would scale or handle already-exposed keys. But it reflects a broader trend—people are actively experimenting with ways to reduce potential quantum risk before it becomes urgent.

Bitcoin Hyper and the Scaling Conversation

While core developers focus on long-term security, Bitcoin Hyper is trying to solve a more immediate problem: Bitcoin’s limited speed and lack of built-in programmability.

The project is being built around the Solana Virtual Machine, aiming to deliver faster transaction finality and lower fees for things like DeFi, gaming, and trading applications.

The way it works is fairly straightforward. Users deposit BTC through a non-custodial bridge, activity happens on the Layer 2, and then the results are settled back to Bitcoin in batches. In practice, it’s meant to keep Bitcoin as the base layer while moving heavier activity off-chain.

The project’s native token, HYPER, is used for fees, staking, governance, and ecosystem incentives. The total supply is 21 billion tokens, with allocations split across development, treasury, marketing, and rewards.

Presale and Next Steps

So far, the presale has raised over $32.4 million, with HYPER priced at around $0.0136 at this stage. The next pricing phase is expected soon.

Early buyers can also stake their tokens for reported yields of around 36% APY, depending on the current program structure.

The broader narrative here is what ties everything together: Bitcoin itself is being debated at the protocol level for long-term security, while at the same time, Layer 2 projects are trying to expand what the network can do today.
