Arizona Teens Charged After Alleged Home Invasion Linked to $66M Crypto

Two teenagers from California are facing a long list of serious felony charges after investigators say they drove hundreds of miles to Arizona to carry out a violent home invasion — all in pursuit of cryptocurrency believed to be worth $66 million.

According to authorities, the 16- and 17-year-old suspects traveled more than 600 miles from San Luis Obispo County to the upscale Sweetwater Ranch neighborhood in Scottsdale. They arrived early on the morning of Jan. 31, dressed in delivery-style uniforms meant to make them look like workers from a shipping company.

Police say the teens forced their way inside the home, restrained two adults with duct tape, and demanded access to cryptocurrency. When one victim insisted they didn’t own any digital assets, the situation quickly turned violent, escalating into a physical assault.

The home invasion unraveled when an adult son, who was elsewhere in the house, managed to call emergency services. Officers rushed to the scene and arrived to the sound of screaming and an apparent struggle inside the home.

By the time police reached the residence, the suspects had fled in a blue Subaru. They didn’t get far. Officers stopped the vehicle at a dead end shortly afterward and took both teens into custody.

Inside the car, investigators found zip ties, duct tape, stolen license plates, and a 3D-printed firearm that did not appear to be loaded. Authorities have not said whether the weapon was functional.

Both suspects were initially held in juvenile detention, but prosecutors have announced plans to try them as adults. Each teen faces eight felony charges, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, and burglary. The older suspect also faces an additional charge for fleeing from police.

Court records show the teens were later released on $50,000 bail and are now being monitored electronically.

Investigators say the younger suspect told police that the two had only recently met and were acting under the direction of unknown individuals communicating through the encrypted messaging app Signal. The contacts — identified only by the aliases “Red” and “8” — allegedly provided the address of the home and sent $1,000 to cover disguises and supplies bought at local stores.

The teen also claimed he was pressured into taking part after being invited on what was described to him as a trip to “tie people up” in exchange for access to cryptocurrency.

The Scottsdale case highlights a growing trend known as “wrench attacks” — physical assaults designed to force crypto holders to give up passwords or private keys. Security researcher Jameson Lopp, who tracks such incidents, has logged around 70 wrench attacks globally in 2025, a sharp rise from the year before.

While this is the first reported wrench attack in the United States in 2026, experts warn that many cases likely go unreported. Analysts say criminals are increasingly using leaked personal data to identify potential targets and recruiting young participants online to distance themselves from the crime.

Investigators have not connected the Scottsdale incident to separate cryptocurrency-related ransom demands reported the same day in Tucson, roughly two hours away.
