There are more than 19 million capital market investors and about 17 million crypto traders in Indonesia.
Robinhood Markets has announced two major acquisitions, officially marking its entry into Indonesia. The U.S.-based financial services company has signed agreements to buy local brokerage Buana Capital, along with PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, a crypto trader licensed under the OKJ.
The announcement, made on Monday, highlights Robinhood’s expansion into one of Southeast Asia’s most active cryptocurrency markets.
“Indonesia represents a fast-growing market for trading, making it an exciting place to further Robinhood’s mission to democratize finance for all,” said Patrick Chan, Robinhood’s Head of Asia.
As part of the move, Pieter Tanuri — the majority owner of both Buana Capital and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto — will join Robinhood as a strategic advisor.
The company did not reveal the value of the deals. According to Reuters, both acquisitions are expected to close in the first half of 2026.
Robinhood’s Move Highlights Rising Retail Interest in Indonesia
Indonesia continues to emerge as a powerhouse for retail investing. The country now has around 17 million crypto traders and more than 19 million capital market investors, according to recent data.
Chainalysis recently ranked Indonesia among the world’s leading crypto markets, placing it 7th globally and first in Southeast Asia in its 2025 crypto adoption index.
Financial inclusion has also been on the rise. The World Bank’s Global Findex 2025 report showed that the percentage of adults in Indonesia with a financial account has grown from roughly 20% in 2011 to about 60% in 2024.
With this expansion, Robinhood plans to introduce its crypto trading services to Indonesian users.
“We look forward to bringing Indonesians the same innovative services that have earned the trust of Robinhood customers globally,” Chan said.
Indonesia Tightens Crypto Rules as Market Grows
While interest in crypto grows, the Indonesian government has recently strengthened its regulatory approach. A tax overhaul significantly increased rates for offshore exchanges, raising them by five times.
Crypto mining hasn’t been spared either — VAT on mining operations doubled from 1.1% to 2.2%, and taxes for both domestic crypto sales and offshore transactions were also increased.
At the same time, Indonesia is exploring the idea of holding Bitcoin as a reserve asset, a potential step aimed at boosting long-term financial stability.
